 It's Back! Pet Peeves Returns!!!
Well, as we've been authorised to do so, I felt that I might as well strike while the iron's hot...
But, I have no pet peeves at the moment.
But, it's worth pointing out - this thread exists for the stuff that NIGGLES, rather than the Big Issues, okay?

My pet peeve today is so-called "diet" food found in the health section of the supermarket -- but when you check the calorie content on the label, you go "Whoa!" You're better off staying AWAY from the fancy packaged "diet" foods (that are loaded with more calories than you'd expect) and just start shopping smarter.

Actually, I have got one.

Did you make that word up or is that unique to the UK? I have to remember it.
My pet peeve: Microsoft Word. Formatting can be godawful and add hours to a project. Picture elements and text boxes go floating off and covering up other objects if you change the text next to them. Delete one paragraph stop and all the font changes. But my coworkers LOVE those fancy boxes because you can add effects to them (shadows, gradient, etc). But I'm the one who has to clean up the mess. If I want fancy formatting, I'll stick with Quark [1].

Actually, it's sort of my own invention - but I based it on the sound of "muttering under one's breath" you often get in cartoons. It can be very, very useful to replace any particularly unpleasant epithet you feel like using to describe people who get on your nerves. Like new MPs!!! harpy wrote: My pet peeve: Microsoft Word. Dammit! I actually had a pet peeve that's been bugging me this week and I forgot. So I guess in its place, I hate it when you remember something for the longest time, then you go some place to retrieve said remembered item to the achieve said remembered task, and then when you get there, you forget. Oh: and when people say, "You speak very good."

Wow, just hearing myself say that in my head to read it is irrtating. Now I understand why some people get so ticked off when a person says "Can I?" rather than "May I?" My Pet Peeve right now: People who do not brake for animals when it would not cause an accient and would only slow them down for a few seconds. Also: Having to write an essay about the Vietnam War that is due tomorrow.

It's not only because it's a pretty rude thing to say, but, it's mainly because you don't speak good: you speak well.
If you're going to comment on someone's ability to speak your mother tongue or the dialect that you speak, you should at least be able to speak it properly yourself.

carpathian_dark_princess wrote: Oh: and when people say, "You speak very good." While I'm the same way, I will say that in some cases, people just never learned proper grammar or parts of vocabulary. I know at my school it was not exactly something that was held up as important as other things. I really learned more English grammar in my German class in high school. Sad thing, he even knew that he had to always start of the class by breaking down the English language and THEN moving forward. So, while it irks me (very much), I try to remember how I must have irked people too at one point. Anyway, right now, my pet peeve - having no oomph to do anything on a Saturday.

Yay!!!
Okay, so one that I was reminded of is feet on the dashboards of cars! I personally do not like people putting their feet on the dashboard...and I know, it is my car and I have the right. But it also bugs me when I look over and see others sitting in cars with their feet up on the dashboard. Do these people not realize that they are going to be forcefully folded in half during a wreck, either by the force of the crash, or the force of the passenger-side airbag? It's just stupid!

How about the ones that stick there feet out the window to air off? First of all... why? And second, it always makes me paranoid that someone is gonna come speeding up alongside them and their feet are just gonna be ripped off at the ankles!!

Re: It's Back! Pet Peeves Returns!!!
Ha! I remember when I was a kid my grandmother would always warn me that if I stuck my hand out of the window another car would come by us and rip it off my arm. It scared me so badly at that time (I think I was around five) that I still never do it, though I highly doubt my hand will go flying off if it is riding the wind close to my car that my mirror is...yet I just don't. I keep my body parts inside.
As for the feet on the dashboard, I use to do it when I was a teenager because I was just really comfortable...at least it was for a while and then my butt would start hurting...so I stopped doing that as well.
