Hades1345 wrote: My personal outlook on paganism is this. Celebrate life, what I call magic is a practice of putting energy into the universe towards a goal and putting all of my intent behind that goal. By performing a spell I am making a commitment to myself and the universe that I will do what I can to achieve that goal. When a spell works for me it is because it was able to help me achieve my Alpha State, an actual state that your brain enters when you perform certain actions, this state allows me to communicate with all the individual parts of my psyche.
I thank you for your opinion, Usdom. Every interaction with those around me have a lesson that I, or they, need to learn. i acknowledge that you have certain beliefs as well as things that you are trying to understand. The only thing that I can think to say to possibly help you is this, magic is what you want it to be. It is powered by belief, if you believe that it is a mystical power that cannot be studied then that is what it is. But also there are those, like me, who believe that magic is a scientific system that functions on the Quantum Theory and therefore works on the sub-atomic connection that bind all that is contained within the universe together.
I hope I was able to clear up, at the least, my own views on magic. May your path in this life be filled with Love, Light, Happiness, and Peace. That was much nicer and more efficient than what I said, and I thank you for that, Hades. You'll have to excuse my rudeness. It was never intended.

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I don't mind at all, no rudeness that I saw. I agree with you whole heartily, I am just such a mother hen. The biggest lesson I have to learn is that i cannot help everyone and that I seriously need to make time for myself; not wait on giving myself attention when i have finally had my semi-annual emotional breakdown because I cannot say no.
I thank you, Midi, you are teaching me so much about how to interact with people. There are time when i just want to scream at people and now I just take a step back so I don't hurt my own defense by getting angry and negative.

 Use of Gods/Goddesses Names
"There seems to be a bit of a controversy in Pagan circles about the use of the names of Gods and Goddesses, either for children, or as a new name for oneself." states K.M. Sheard, author of what seems to be the most definitive book on pagan names that I've yet found. Sheard, in one of her blog entries, differentiated between polytheists and pantheists regarding the name issue. She wrote: K.M. Sheard wrote: If you are a polytheist — if you consider the Gods to be distinct, individual entities, completely separate from mortal life — perhaps you might agree that using their names is inappropriate.
But if you are a pantheist — if you believe that the Divine is in all things, making us all essentially ‘divine beings’ — then choosing the name of a God or Goddess might be seen as not just acceptable, but suitable and respectful. So, where do you stand on the issue of names? Do you find it inappropriate or perfectly fine to use the names of gods and goddesses in naming yourself, or in naming a child or even a pet? -- Nephele Your Pagan Name in Anagram

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I must really be a full out pantheist then, because I see nothing at all wrong with using the names of the gods and goddesses. Hell, ALL of my pets are named ofter the gods (past, present, and future) and I see nothing wrong with a person choosing a god or goddess name for his or her self or for a child.
To me, the gods are strictly symbolic. They are personifications in my mind, created to explain natural phenomenon. Why would I be shy about using such names for everyday purposes given that, and the idea that the divine (aka, Nature) is already part of who I am?
So yeah, use the gods and goddesses are names. I see no harm it in. I do actually have a pagan friend of mine who get righteously pissed off at even the thought of using their names for our own. I don't get it myself.

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I'm not sure where I stand on the issue. I mean, I named my cat Bastet, but only because it seemed right at the time, and to be honest, I was 14 when I named her and wasn't Pagan then. The name just came to me. So I think it'd be weird to change her name now. She's 13 years old. She might get confused if I started calling her another name. Although I do sometimes call her little missy.
I wouldn't get angry with someone if they named their pet, themselves, or their child, after a God or Goddess. I would think they probably put some thought into it before they did it. I think it has more to do with the intent behind it rather than anything else.

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I see no problem with it, we go around acknowledging the divine in all life so why should we have a problem with naming. For me if I were to name a child or myself, say Apollo for example, then I am giving that name as a wish...and quite possibly manifesting the aspects associated with that name into the physical world. Almost like naming a child Bella knowing that it means beautiful.

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I wouldn't name anything after a deity, but then I'm a polytheist and I keep the names of the gods for the gods... I wouldn't go so far as to say it's hugely disrespectful, but a part of me doesn't feel comfy in using deity names in that way (it's hard to really explain). I don't care if other people use the names for pets/children... it's none of my business being honest. I had a pagan friend that called his daughter Freya, and he called himself Herne. I guess it's personal choice and I have no right to say others are wrong for using the names they like, or feel spiritually close to, for the souls they love

 Re: The Paganism Thread
The only special thing I'm doing is the same thing that I do for every Sabbat. I dive deep into the internet and write down legends, myths, fairy tales, and bed time stories. They are for my own entertainment but I expect by the time I have children there will be a very large collection for them to chose from. And I made my pumpkin harvest cookies and listened to Loreena McKenit while watching the men's gymnastics on NBC.

 Re: The Paganism Thread
I was thinking about doing a bonfire, but it ended up raining, so I didn't really do anything for Lammas. I did go to the local pagan store, though, and bought a few supplies.
