 Re: Your Shtetl Name
harpy, here you go, shtetl girl! (I had to replace the i,l in your scramble with b,t):
Sprinca bat Lasko = kiariclapsbasnt
Sprinca: derived from "Shprintse" (and pronounced the same way), a Yiddish name that in turn is thought either to have been derived from the Middle High German word sprinze (meaning "sparrowhawk"), or the Italian word speranza (meaning "hope").
bat Lasko: "daughter of Lasko" – diminutive of "Elozer" ("Eleazar" and "Lazarus" in English). This was the name of a son of Aaron in the bible, meaning "god has helped."

 Re: Your Shtetl Name
Letalis Senium, you are now harpy's shtetl boy (after replacing your scramble's g,j with b,n):
Raphael ben Mowstel = balhoslaewretnpme
Raphael: the German form, which appears as "Rifoel" in transliterated Yiddish, meaning "god has healed."
ben Mowstel: "son of Mowstel" – from "Mostel," a variant of "Moyshe" ("Moses" in English).

Thank you! (I think Shprintze was one of Tevye's daughters in Fiddler on the Roof - she wasn't a major player) Nu, Yente, you couldn't make us Tzeitel and Motel? Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles...(dances on the roof)

Letalis Senium wrote: Oh great, the LS & Harpy show hijacks a thread again. Okay, you two asked for it... You get a Yiddish/Nature name (first & middle) for any ensuing offspring (preferably female): Shayna Millepertuis= Letalis Senium + Harpy Shayna: Yiddish, meaning "beautiful." Millepertuis: French name for St. John's wort. -- Nephele

 Re: Your Shtetl Name
SadakoMoose, I had to replace c,f,w in your name with b,e,n:
Dovid ben Arele = divadloeerben
Dovid: Yiddish form of the Hebrew "David," the name of Israel's second and greatest King.
ben Arele: "son of Arele" (pronounced AH-reh-leh), a Yiddish diminutive of Aaron, the name of Moses' brother who became the first priest of the Temple and the ancestor of the Jewish priestly caste.
Alternately (and with one less letter replacement, in that I replace the a,w in your name with b,n), you are:
Dovid'l ben Cerf = divdloceefrbn
Dovid'l: Yiddish diminutive of David.
ben Cerf: "son of Cerf." Cerf, used by Jews in Alsace since the second half of the 18th century) is a French translation of the Yiddish "Hirsh," which means "stag; deer" and is an equivalent (kinnui) for the Hebrew name "Napthali." Napthali was one of the sons of Jacob who, when blessed by his father, was compared to a deer.

-- Nephele Sounds like Bennett Cerf.

Do you remember his children's joke books? They always seemed to be in print, no matter how old they were. I first saw them as a child at my public library. -- Nephele
