Post Re: It's Back! Pet Peeves Returns!!!
I will be the first to admit that I screw up my grammar and spelling often. I type faster than I spell...I am working on it though. Oddly enough, I think I can sometimes spell longer words better than I can the shorter ones. I often confuse my b's and d's and (as weird as this may sound) type things out backwards. Typing slower and reading what I write usually helps me catch it but I sometimes do not take the time to do that.

Usually to keep myself from the gruesome world of contractions I just spell out what I want to say. I do not use contractions very much and never at all in my personal writings.

Post Re: It's Back! Pet Peeves Returns!!!
I am really starting to get peeved at the overly-patriotic racist (mostly southern) assholes who think it fitting to insult every Muslim at any given opportunity because they think that all people in the Islamic faith want to "take over America and destroy our country and our rights" and all that other bullshite. Now I'm not Muslim myself, but I do believe very strongly that you should never intentionally insult or disrespect any other person for whatever reason unless they give reason to and even then it better be a damn good reason.
Example, my theoretical step-father (he hasn't adopted me nor will he as long as I have a say in the matter) is one of those older southern men who grew up in a time before Martin Luther King (for those who don't know he was a civil rights leader and promoted peace over violence, a truly good man) when public segregation and racism was allowed. I understand that he grew up in such a time and that's how he was raised etc. but times have changed a lot since then. Now we have people of all races and religions socializing and acting like one giant family as we ought to. Yet despite that, this unbelievable waste of human filth will take every chance he can to criticize and demoralize every other race and religion with racial slurs and words that would make your insides crawl with hate just to hear. I tried to tolerate it with sheer force of will for the better part of two years since I've known him and they got married for my mothers sake and held my tongue as best as inhumanly possible. This past time, we were watching the news and there was a story on afghanistan like every other day and I knew immediately this wasn't going to bode well for me mentally. Sure enough he starts harking on Muslim this and Islam that and so on and I did hold my tongue.......until he started with the racial slurs. I don't know what ill-tempered spirit possessed me to stand up and start arguing with this man. One thing led to another and eventually he said "boy, you better shut your mouth before I shut it for you, hear me son?" On a side note I also strongly believe the only person on this earth who has the right to call me son is my own father to the point where if someone calls me son they better brace for impact because I will snap. Apparently, he didn't get the memo as my mental prowess failed in an instant and I, to put it bluntly, quite literally knocked him on his ass and stormed out of the house to my car with the rage of Mr.Hyde following me all the way down the highway.

This is pet peeves thread, what you're talking about is a bigger issue and should probably be in its own thread. But intolleracne fro others does irritate me as well.

darkfire346, I'm so sorry that you have to deal with that stepfather of yours. Yikes. And I agree with you – the man doesn't have the right to call you "son" unless you give him that right. I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a stepfather like that calling me his child, either.

Note to all: Yes, racism and intolerance are big issues, which have been discussed numerous times on this board. But since darkfire346's peeve appears to be primarily about how he has to deal with an intolerant stepfather in his life, then best to keep it here in the peeve thread and give him support. And not suggest posting a separate topic that might be construed as something focusing primarily on the person posting, and what he has to deal with in his life.

Also, let's leave the call on stuff like this to the Moderators. ;)

apologies to any who might have taken that last the wrong way. obviously I was not in my right mind. as for the after-affects i talked with my mother and apologized to both of them and he, in a sign that maybe I might have hit him harder than i thought, also apologized and said he would try and restrain hisself from now on. I said quite bluntly that he would do well to remember that lest the next time I'll give him more than just a "purple-ish blue knot with a red imprint of 3 of my knuckles" (as described word for word by mother beforehand) on his forehead and he just said he understood. So everything should be nigh alright now but enough about me its time to get back on topic.

Pet peeve of the day (so far): when there are complications at a fathers day Cook-Out involving the grill, charcoal, and apparently too much lighter fluid. Propane tank was outta propane so we get some charcoal and then it just literally blew up in our faces.

That reminds me of that olde commercial where the father's out there dousing the charcoal with a couple of bottles of lighter fluid. He lights the match and the whole thing goes up *whoosh*.

I don't use lighter fluid in barbeque pits, it tastes nasty on the meat.

The same goes for there, their, and they're! It annoys to me to high heaven kids these days when I see them regularly misuse the words! What are they teaching these kids in school these days?

Actually, the same goes, I find, for adults. I get some truly horrendous e-mails from colleagues at work... Thank goodness that for health and safety reasons they don't allow us to have sharp objects, otherwise I'm absolutely sure that by now I would have plucked my eyes out. Or better still, somebody else's eyes.

I see a lot of it at work, as well...but I'm a bit more understanding there. Most of the people I work with are from other countries, and I understand that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn as a second language. I have to give my boss a little slack for using "mints" instead of "minutes" often times in emails. :)

The thing is, he knows he has difficulties with English, especially written, and he will at least have me proof and rework his stuff when it is going out across the company or is a presentation to upper management.

Many of the people I work with directly are from other countries as well. In the team that I lead, most of the people are from India, and some have a pretty good grasp of the written English language, others don't. So I often get emails that are not great in spelling or grammar (sometimes I have to read it a few times to understand), but they try. I've had to learn tolerance for grammar/spelling mistakes because of that. Not to mention my own spelling/word errors have been getting beyond me lately (much to my own dismay).

I really have a pet-peeve about my neighbor just walking in my house the way she does. My mom likes to have the door open for fresh air when it's not too hot out, and she leaves the screen door unlocked so when people knock she doesn't have to get up to answer it (as it is hard for her to get up) and I'm not always in the room. But... knock first! Just because the door is open doesn't mean you can just come and go as you fucking please. The fact that I'm not very fond of that particular neighbor to begin with doesn't help matters.

Sorry, I was trying to god-modd, I was just agreeing...I thought it sounded like a pretty big issue, and seemed bigger than a "pet peeve" or annoyance so I was kinda trying to sympathise. I didn't really have anything else to add, so I was just saying that, it sounds like an awful thing to put up with.

When someone gets offended abou someone not understand what a rather abstract work of art is supposed to be. I may have come off strong, but really, he was unnessicarily rude about it.

Puck, from the way he sounds, it may be best just to give this character a wide berth. Some people have NO social skills.

Holy crap, Puck, that was a totally uncalled for response to you! You apologised numerous times - out of sheer courtesy, because there was absolutely no reason for you to do so - and he/she continued being obnoxious!

Reminds me of VampireFreaks.

Looks like it was drawn by a kindergartener. I would've been a lot more insulting simply because he was an asshat to you. ;)

Seriously, if people can't handle the tiniest bit of questioning or criticism about their art they will stagnate and be the same crappy artist they were when they began. Fine for them, I'd rather learn and grow as an artist.
