Greetings all,

Just alittle curious, as to why some new threads are locked, but not ones from, say 2002? For example... Whos in arizona. The newest thread is locked (dated oct. 2005) while the old thread isnt (dated 2002), and ive been asked NOT to post on old threads. Im afraid to start a new thread on the subject for fears of flaming, and such. any thoughts?

*sigh*

I feel like I have (or someone else has) repeated this a hundred times.

Some old threads simply fall down to the bottom of the list and don't need to be locked because they're pages and pages away and aren't being considered by the vast majority of the membership. No one has the time to lock every single solitary thread that gets old. We prefer to rely on users having some common sense instead.

Old threads that get revived will get locked when they are well and truly dead, and no one is adding anything of value. Posts that are the equivalent of "yeah, me too" or "yeah, there's no goths where I live either" add no value to discussion. We also lock threads as per our discretion when we feel it is necessary to move things along to fresher topics.

If you have something poignant and erudite to add to an old thread, by all means, use the old thread. If it directly correlates to that thread. If you're just adding something vaguely, remotely, sorta-kinda related, well, someone's probably going to look askance at you. Same thing applies if all you're doing is repeating what was already stated in that thread. If you're not sure, ask someone on staff.

And by the way, next time, post questions in the "Help" forum, not the area meant for notices and feedback. (Actually reading forum descriptions help, you know.)

I would think the common sense thing to do would be to delete, or merge the old one into the new, or lock the older and not the new one. Thats just me. As for the location of where i posted..."A place for notices and discussion regarding things about the domain, the site, the forums and the services. " first thing caught my eye, figured a good place to start. Sorry about the mix up, ill go sit in the corner now.

And as has been discussed many times before, we'd prefer to keep as much of the pertinent discussion as possible inside of one consistent thread instead of hundreds of new ones popping up every few weeks on the same topic. Seem far fetched? Not really, considering there are literally thousands of members on this board. How you would do things is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. This system has been working for years now.

Not doubting the system, just how the new people to it are handled. :o and to think, this all started with me being told not to post on old forums...

And you essentially did, in that thread, what I suggested you don't do. You pretty well repeated a sentiment that had already been expressed, several months after the fact. That's why you were called out on it.

Now, give it a rest.
