For a more day to day look, the rivet head is a great style.

I would love to have the occasion to go all Trad/Victorian esc goth

My favorite look is the sort of militaristic brand of goth. That's what I usually aim for when I goth up. I think some rivet-heads go for that feel as well? I'm not sure what the actual term is. This breed of goth is more commonly found in Europe (especially Germany) than in the United States.

I also dig the gothabilly look. And the burlesque goths.

Hands down it has to be Victorian Goths and Traditional Goths
(I kind of incorporate a little of both in my wardrobe)

My favorites are interesting combinations or variations on different types.

The Egyptian's one of my favorites because of the silhouette and because where I live light cotton is a very good thing.
Trad is nice as is Victorian/ Edwardian. Practical rivethead styles work too.

If I haaaaaaaaaaad to chose specifically, I'd have to go with just classic old school batcave goth. Sisters of Mercy style.

Though I still haven't worn this fashion in its entirety, I am intrigued by the Gothic Lolita look from Japan. They look like little dolls! and there are all different types (from dark victorian to sweet lolitas dressed in pastels and many things in between). I have some of the shoes though, that I wear with other outfits. They are too cute!

For some reason I find the Oujisama (boyish Victorian) Loli style appealing. (It's called Kodona in the US sometimes. I think. I'm not an expert on the Gothic Lolita subculture.)

I think the look I like the best is classic, old-school 80's goth, because it is familiar and comfortable and fuck it: I'm old. Not that any of us ever expected to be saying that in the 80's when we were actually doing it. We were all going to live dark and die young, right?

Hippy goth comes pretty natural to me, although truth be told I tend to go through light and dark cycles like the phases of the moon. For the most part, though, I'm much too barefoot, peace-mongering and tree-huggy for goth purists, but morbid and spooky enough to give the hippies a serious case of the creeps. I'm pretty comfortable taking the holistic approach and embracing both sides of me without conflict. But then of course, I'm 40 and have been through a lot of therapy.

Witchy goth also works for me because duh.

I like that corp goth exists, but am also grateful that I don't always have to do it.

I have a feeling I am not going to be forgiven for this, but I have to say it anyway. I am kind of fond of the young babybats because I am a parent and I think its cute. I'm so sorry. (If my daughter heard me say that out loud, she'd run straight to the mall at first opportunity and dress herself in all the yellow she could get her hands on.)

I do NOT understand parents who discourage or worse, punish their kids for the way they dress or what they do with their hair. They are young and experimenting, it does no harm and develops them as a person. Who that person ultimately becomes is not in my power to decide as a parent, I can only provide love and guidance and let them grow. "But they can't get a job looking like that blah blah blah." What the hell? The kid's 14. He doesn't have his working papers yet, let alone a resume. Let him do this now while he can, and when he's old enough to hit the workforce, he'll make his own decisions and figure something out. That's what real maturity is. Blind conformity is not an adequate substitute.

That being said, and still speaking as a parent, I also don't understand goth parents who try to raise their children to "be goths". (Same applies to hippies, etc.) Same shit, different dress. Let the kids be themselves, whether they turn into artsy inky iconoclasts or giggly blond cheerleaders.

Styles I'm not fond of: military-inspired goth, because it is kind of the polar opposite of the whole peace-love-and-protect-the-endangered-bats hippie trip. I'm also not fond of the Lolita style, for personal reasons that I won't go into here out of respect for those who strongly identify with that style, and also because I'm a fat, 40-year-old mother of three, with grey hair, wrinkles, and love handles, and it would look completely stupid on me.

Ultimately what I like best about goth is that it embraces so much diversity. There isn't only one style that is goth. Moreover, I think that however one dresses, goth is a philosophy (goth began as music, and the philosophy is what is behind the music.) I think as you grow through goth, that philosophy becomes more evident as what is really important to you, regardless of illusory physical appearances.

Very well said, Mother Dreadful! I'm lucky in that I had parents who always supported me no matter what I wanted to wear. The only restrictions were no tattoos, piercings, or hair dye until I was 18. Seeing the way my friend's parents act about what they want to wear or who they want to be, I thank my lucky stars a thousand times over. Parents should be there to guide and support their children, not to decide every single aspect of their life.

My favourite goth typs are old school goth, casual goth (me), punk goth, and romantic goth, and a sort of mix of romantic and punk goth.
