Avar, just because Harry doesn't know something doesn't mean that all Americans are ignorant of our history. I'm well aware(as are a great many of Americans) of the rationing because it also happened over here.
I've seen a few adverts from that era that urged women to buy the liquid stockings suggesting that they wouldn't be 'put together' without them, i. e. it would be unfashionable to look like you weren't wearing stockings.

I mean, it's a cute idea at the outset, but it's designed to make a sexually mature woman look like a little girl...and encourages men to find little girls sexy. This is JUST my opinion, and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings to talk down on anyone who likes the lolita style!! I doubt that this is the intent of people who wear the fashion though. Well it most definitely isn't my intent. I agree that a mature woman dressing like a little girl is a tad odd but considering my small stature and the fact that I kinda am a little girl I think it's a little different. Basically I think lolita has an age limit.

The lolita fashion squicks me in the same way as adult men drooling over girls in school uniforms. It's just not right.

A lot of teenage guys I know have the same kind of "naughty schoolgirl" fantasy/fetish. Sad thing is they tell me about it. It probably just carries on into adulthood, like fart jokes. But back on topic... ripped stocking, could be left over from a time where they maybe thought a rip in the stocking was a woman who coudn't be bothered with total modesty? Vague, but you guys have probably noticed you have to work hard to get what I mean by things

I have no problem with teenage guys having pervy thoughts about teenage girls in school uniforms. It's when it's a grown man in his 20s and beyond oggling high school girls(or younger) that it's weird.

Yes I know but as I said maybe it just... continues into adulthood, and I suppose a guy in his early 20s at least isn't too bad if it's a girl in later high schooling (over here in Aussie terms high school might be a different age group). Most people have their last year at around 17 or 18 so I suppose THAT isn't too bad. I suppose it depends on the age gap between the oggler and the object of the oggling. 5 years would be the absolute limit for me not to think it gross, as long as it only extends to oggling. I'm not one to fuss over age

As long as people aren't violating the law there's no problem. I would not continue dating someone who wanted me to dress in a school uniform, though.

I have seen Victorian stockings that looked like basically extra-long socks but I don't recall if they were wool or cotton [I think they were cotton]. Every now and then I see a complete matching pair for sale. They don't seem to go for much.
But for a light-weight sheer stocking they would have been limited to using something like light weight sheer lawn cotton, or silk, lace, or some kind of netting. I can't think of many other materials that they would have had to try for making things that were sheer.
Yeah true. In my travels I have seen accounts of stockings that were made of fabric cut on the bias (to make it stretchy enough to mold to legs/feet) and seamed together. I think that way was from a time other than Victorian, and the sheer ones were for rich folk, but I'd have to check. (Actually, remembering that way - I am now going to keep my eyes out for fine fabric in nice patterns >:3 )

Re: Ripped stockings and societies opinion.
I think that most of the time women who are gawked at for wearing a school uniform are wearing it in a way for that exact reason because as above stated, school uniforms aren't really very slutty.

It's strange how liberal our uniform is in regards to showing skin. Our shirt buttons generally have 2 left unbuttoned, some girls have had 3 in the past (so as it ends JUST under their boobs). Our skirts are quite short in comparison to the regular woll knee lengths I see at other schools, and they are also light cottony see through things. As well as the button up dress shirts are kinda see through. I swear our uniform was designed by a man [1], skirts that blowup in the slightest breeze, see through shirts, as well as all being very impractical, you sweat to death in winter whilst at the same time freezing. OH and the pants from the official suppliers are REALLY long, the size 8 was at least 5" too long from memory. Definitely designed by a man [1]Sexist thing my mother always says, yeah, I know

Re: Ripped stockings and societies opinion.
I know adult entertainers who actually walked right into a catholic private school not far from here [I'll leave the name out], explained that they were performers, and bought school girl uniforms directly from the school. A skirt that is knee length on a child or tween will appear short on an adult [unless she's on the short side]. The school didn't seem to have any second thoughts about selling their uniforms to people who admitted what they were going to use them for. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a profit margin on them so the schools can use them as an additional source of revenue.
Must be quite the racket if you think about it. Make all your students wear uniforms, take a % off of each piece of clothing sold to the students. Figure most students will want a week or two worth so they don't have to do laundry as often and that's a pretty decent business on its own.

A lot of people start off in the bright childish colors of sweet lolita, but those people tend to phase out a lot. And a lot of those that stay a part of the fashion subculture tend to morph into the arisocrat fashion some what. http://www.lolitafashion.org/aristocrat.php

Re: Ripped stockings and societies opinion.
I wasn't talking about lolita fashion, hun. Just that weird school girl obsession that some guys are into.
