For guys, as well as girls, there's always T-shirt modification, and general shirt modification. :)

I guess one thing guys could do, is get a regular collared shirt, and goth it up, like with stencils and such. Plus there a clothes that guys can learn to sew together, such as poet's shirts and vests.

Plus there are kilts to look into. :D

To be honest, poet shirts and kilts have never interested me. Vests and multi-tiered mantles seem nice though. Although I'd probably have to pick special occasions to wear those.

As far as tshirt and collared shirt modification goes, I could probably do that. I'd be a little worried about looking like the emo and spooky kids around campus, but I could always incorporate some reprehensible images on them to counteract that.

I've been really interested in learning how to knit for a while now, although I don't have anyone to teach me. My grandmother knows how to crochet though.

Speaking of grandmothers, my other grandmother has a sewing machine, although I don't know if she has it around or if she's in the condition to use it.

I agree that the DIY element has sadly shrunk, which is a real shame. I'm sick of going out to self labelled 'goth clubs' and seeing fifty girls either in Cyberdog and only Cyberdog, any one of the many cheap and not so cheerful goth-in-a-box stalls in Camden - which make Hot Topic look like haute couture, or generic no-effort-required emo/indie.

I can't say much, because I really truly lack the time to do much DIYing anymore (five days of full classes followed by nightly four hours homework, breaking out the pins and fabric is the last thing I want to do then as I don't actually find it relaxing, I'm just able to and pretty adept at doing it). Still, I find it sad that a lot of creativity has gone and I hope that, as other people have said in the thread before, the economic downturn will give a bit of a jumpstart to it all and encourage people to break out needle and thread and rise up against their empty wallets! :) I certainly intend to during the Christmas holidays. I've got my eye on a couple of ballgown skirts that are crying out to be made.

I mod my clothing. I goto hottopic or the like, find something interesting, and sew it together with other things. Sometimes ill make tripp shirts by killing a pair of tripps and putting the chains/D-rings all over a shirt along with strips of cloth. idk w/e looks kewl I guess.

I make my own jewelry as well and then sell it to my friends and such. Anyways id say its very much alive in the few freaks like us out there xD

i make and modify my own clothes. i used to use a needle and thread to add goadee`s to my pants, and i made or modified nearly every top in my summer wardrobe. all my denim things have been drawn on with fabric markers, and i make all my jewelry. i'm making a skirt at the moment, when it's done i'll up load a picture. i understand that some people don't have time to do this, i've always been homschooled so time is always the one thing i've had alot of. i'm entering college this spring so things might change then...

basically i slit the pants leg and added a triangular piece of fabric which made them look like bell bottoms on steroids. basically goadee is the term for triangular inserts.

I think the DIY aspect was dwindling. People are often of the mentality that "I want it right now!" and if you have to make something yourself it takes time, so they just purchase what they want.

I couldn't agree more. I think the majority of it has to do with big chain stores *cough cough* Hot Topic *cough* *cough* making it super easy for anyone with money to just waltz in and buy a "gothic" *shudders" outfit. I was recently at a mall with some friends and we decided to go into the Hot Topic just for laughs. I was kinda upset to see that they are now stocking many of the original goth band shirts and merchandise, ex: the original Bela Lugosi Bauhaus shirt. This was rather disappointing. I've just been getting into the DIY thing and I have to say that making my own clothing is so much more satisfying - safety pins are one of the greatest inventions ever!

I CAN'T AGREE MORE! i didn't think i'd ever find anyopne else who digs safety pins. and hot topic is SO poser.

My Sopor tees are from internet pictures, I am loath to get a band shirt unless its a real tour one sold at a gig. Small shops are good for picking up odd bits to accessorize with. I look the way I want to project myself ("scary goth" judging by peoples reactions) and not to fit in or a stereotype.

I just found a brand new goth DIY site:Be My Goth

Literally - the site just got up and running this year. They have a few starter projects on the site (though they mentioned the nicer tutorials will require a fee) and they have a forum. I hope that more people will join the forum (I will), perhaps some members from our lovely community.... *wink*

Kind of sucks about the fee though...although I do kind of understand why they do it... I"m checking it out now to decide if I want to join in. Thanks for the share!
