Speaking of Death as a goth idol, how many people here have a favorite god/goddess of death?

Mine is Libitina. In ancient Rome, she was revered as a black-robed goddess of death, corpses, and funerals. But she's additionally a goddess of voluptuous delight! (When she was sometimes referred to as Venus Libitina.)

In the earliest time of Rome's history, when the people were ruled by kings, the 6th king of Rome, Servius Tullius (578-535 B.C.E.), made a decree that for every person who died in Rome a piece of money had to be deposited in the temple of Libitina. All materials for funerals were bought or borrowed from the temple of Libitina, and Rome's offical death registry was kept in the temple of Libitina.

The Greco-Roman pantheon is my favorite pantheon, so I'll have to say Hades/Pluto.

Post Re: Your goth idol?
This is gonna sound a bit weird, geeky and possibly even stalkerish but...

I have 2 friends, a couple, who are my goth idols. The lady is just under 20 years older than me, and her SO is around the same age I think, and so they have been into Goth since the 80s etc. They are my friends, despite the obvious age gap, but don't treat me like a little gothling who knows nothing but I have felt like I've been taken under their dark wings a little. But they are very inspirational- both grown, responsible adults (the lady has 2 teenaged sons) who work hard and are very lovely people (love animals, have rescued cats, also held a trick-or-treat kinda deal for local kiddies on their street this year)...I know it sounds weird, but I feel like they are a really influence on me XD They show me you can be whoever you like, and that as long as you're responsible and everything, it doesn't matter if you buy toys and things for your house :3 (they have a BEAUTIFUL house! Filled with lovelies!). Of course I knew these things anyway, but its awfully encouraging to go into this couple's house and see all their lovely things and realise "actually, they worked bloody hard to be able to have all these lovely things, and why the hell not?" They are genuinely fabulous people, very good-hearted people, but are so gothy and cool at the same time...makes me wanna be like them when I grow up  They're stylish and fun, but generous and kind, and they're just great people!

(And thanks to them I felt it was ok for me to start buying Monster High dolls even though I'm in my mid-twenties now XD ).

My latest goth idol is Caitlin Doughty, of Ask a Mortician.

She's interesting, informative, and fun. Here's another reason why I idolize her. :D

Blackaver: I too had a lovely fairy goth-mother and father who inducted me into the darkness. Not that odd, methinks.

Libitina . . . the only word that comes to my mind that sounds *remotely* like that is libation.

Tough call.... If you'd asked me ten years ago, I'd definitely include Rozz Williams, but I find myself less able to get into maybe half of his music at this age (makes sense --I've also gotten a lot less self-loathing with age; not saying one has to be self-loathing to get into Rozz Williams, just that it's very easy to when you are), and while I've certainly given up on distancing myself from Goth, my tastes, interests, and influences are far more diverse than the typical gothic staples.

I'd definitely have to include David Bowie, Gavin Friday (even though he insists Virgin Prunes was never a Goth band, they're "avant-garde punk"), Danielle Dax, and Claudia Brücken (I have no idea why Propaganda isn't on more lists of Goth club staples, their music always struck me as perfect for Goth nights, and Brücken's voice is divine). Oh, and Theda bara, Guy Maddin, and Edward Gorey.

Fictional characters I'd include would be Desire (from Sandman), Edward Scissorhands, Dr. Frank N Furter, and Gomez Addams --though I'm undecided if John Astin's Gomez or Raul Julia's Gomez is more Goth idol-worthy (it's so rare that two actors can own the same character so completely).

fictionally: Lady Death, not the one from Sandman comics, the one from Chaos Comics, i worshiped her as a teenager

Marilyn Manson. Yeah so what if he's "mainstream", it's not as if he compromised his style because of it. He is a great showman, poet, painter and intellect.
He introduced a lot of people to the beauty that the dark side of life holds. There's no need to be snobby about being goth, he's great. :)

I don't really have idols - people I'd like to be like, but I've got few I really admire.

Real People - Pete Steele (I loved his cynicism), Emilie Autumn, Voltaire, Patricia Morrison (Sisters of Mercy).

Fictional: most female characters from Requiem Vampire Knight with Dame Venus and Rebecca being my favourites :)

Nick Cave. He's a brilliant writer and has inspired me in many ways. I hope to one day meet him.
