Post Does gothic make any sense?
Is there a common attitude or spirit in the scene? Is gothic an answer to the question about the meaning of life? Is here anybody who asks this question before? Or is gothic just a thoughtless expression of a senceless existence in a world that doesn't care?

Think twice, it's magic.

It makes sense if you drink all the absinthe and squint ;)

But you can't pin something like that down into a neat generalisation especially not goths, it's like herding cats. Just decide what it means to you and be content.

Over time, I've come to find that people tend to define what isn't goth, rather than what is, in order to define what goth is. Namely when it has to do with music, people are more caught up in 'what isn't goth music' to narrow down what 'is', which doesn't actually narrow the gap too much.

It seems pretty retroactive and nonsensical that way sometimes. It's probably one of those things where you just can't ask if it makes sense to someone else if it does to one's self.

And now I've told everyone that, so I have to go create a different sub sub style.

Well, be sure to let us know the rules for your new sub sub style. Then we can make sure everyone knows the new parameters with which to ascertain whether something is not goth. Because we all know definition by exclusion is the best way to delineate a shadowy ideal.

Nothing is goth EVER, unless I say it is. Or they have a nostril-hawk.

No, mo-hawks have been done! It has to be a nostril-hawk.

To be honest none of this makes sense to me. But I have to admit that I do enjoy the chaos and variety.

Oh, Goth has something to do with darkness, right? I read on some random forum I googled that I need to learn some dancing moves, make a mysterious garden, and modify my car (I actually have a truck, but don't tell anyone!) in order to be goth.

To me goth is an affinity for the aspects of life which tend to possess dark, somber, or morbid aesthetic qualities. I think that inclination is the heart of goth, and it bleeds over into clothing, music, movies, and other interests. But that's merely my interpretation.

Some people do it to rebel against their parents...others do it to get laid.

Laid? Maybe I'm not doing Goth right....

I tend to gravitate towards the cyber/industrial aspect of the goth subculture for that very reason; as machines/robots are easy.

...Wait I said too much about my personal motiviations; disregard.

Really? I had thought Earth girls were easy. (Very bad movie title puns...)
