 Re: Reactions of Disgust
Beloved Doll wrote: I haven`t had too much negativity, surprisingly. I`ve had a lot of positive reactions. I think the worst I`ve had was an elderly woman giving me a nasty look at the mall and a couple of girls looked on with jealously, according to my boyfriend. My first ex`s mother used to call me a devil-worshipper all the time even though I`m Christian. Otherwise have been pretty good about it, or at least to my knowledge. Wow, nice; once, my ex boyfriend's mom told me I looked like the daughter of Satan. Ha! Today, however, a gal stopped for a millionth of a second, looked straight at me and shouted, "Ohmigosh I LOVE your outfit!!!" And at a rest stop earlier, I was leaning against my car waiting for someone and a bunch of kids on a bus from a nearby town were leaning out the windows shouting commentary about my yarn falls. After about a minute, I heard someone say "Katherine. Katherine!" from inside the bus. Recognizing her voice, I shouted, "Yasuko sensei!!" She ran off the bus to meet me and we hugged. She had been looking at my falls and had suddenly realized that she KNEW me! So I got to meet my teacher I haven't seen in three years. OK, so I won't lead the thread any further astray now x3

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
lol, I`m afraid I won`t be much help either. If anything, I`ve gotten more compliments as a goth than before turning. I used to get called ugly all the time and get picked on. Since turning goth, it`s like everyone did a 180. I guess it depends on the area and the kind of people you get exposed to.
One dude on the internet said "nobody dresses goth anymore" but you know, it`s the internet so not only was he stupid and wrong, but his comment meant nothing. One guy in a truck called me a freak cuz I turned down his advances. Since when does being called a freak hurtful to a goth? XD

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
For me I actually LOVE it when people call me freak or weird. Mainly I think it is because I tried to fit in for years and then when I decied it wasn't worth it I was suddenly happy. As for being confronted, several people at my church have asked me about it and one girl whom I really dislike and is extreamly rude said that I looked like I belonged with the Devil. At the end of the day though, it hardly matters.

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
I know the reactions in church, many Christians I know don't understand how one can go with the other, but as long as it fits for the individual, I don't care. M yboyfriend kept telling me I looked like a witch and that he didn't like that as it's against his fiath, but heyho, he learnt to live with it. After all, he knew it before he fell in love

I've had to explain to my parents mulitple times that I'm not becoming a satanist and that goth is occultic or anything. I don't like to judge people about that stuff anyhow. My bf says that too, he told me that it freaks him out and he said his first impression of me was that I looked like a raving b***h. But he eventually got past the black and now doesn't really care as long as I don't dress uber goth all the time.

And when people stare I always go out of my way to make eye contact and smile, because I feel that this disarms them.

Same here, I've been heckled by some cashiers before, and I just smiled and told them to have a nice day. Needless to say the look on their faces was perfect.

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
the thing that bugs me the most is that when i walk into a store *no one* greets me. i was walking into a store and i was walking in in front of my mother and brother and the employee looked right at me but didnt say anything, my mom and brother walk in 10 seconds later and the employee greets them! i was so upset because i hate it when people do that, if i were green with blue poka dots they still should have greeted me.
I was kinda mad so i walked up and spoke to him in the sweetest voice i had: Me: excuse me? Employee: yes...? Me:i walked into the door a few seconds ago and you looked right at me, right? Employee: umm... yes Me: i dont mean to be *rude* but just because im not dressed like everyone else that doesnt mean i dont deserve a 'hello, welcome' im a human being too am i not? Employee: uh... yeah i guess..i- Me: you guess? what do you mean you guess? i breath just like any other human being i have eyes, legs and tits just like any other woman. am i not worthy of a simple 'hello'? Employee: yes, uh..i- Me: no its too late now, im already scared for life, thanks (im a little drama queen what can i say). i have gone to atleast ten stores this week and do you know how many people have greeted me? 1. you may not realize this but it does hurt my feelings that people think im not worthy of one simple word just because of how i look... do i scare you or somthing? Employee: no um- Me: *speaks in sophisticated* well im sorry if i came off as a bitch but a word to the wise sir, just becasue a person is dressed in all black that doesnt mean they dont have feelings. i am a costomer here and i expected to be treated like one, but since im obviously not worthy of this domain ill bid you a spooky day... *dramaticaly curtseys and leaves*
the man was at lost for words... XD... i have to say that was one of my proudest moments

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
Funnily enough I hate it when employees greet people at places. I normally take not being greeted as the employee acknowledging that you *probably* know they're forced to do it and are cool enough not to complain to their manager if they don't.

Yeah I see where you're coming from, but everyone has a different opinion when it comes to stuff like that. I was feeling bitchy (as you can obviously see) that day, so thats the only reason Ihad enough courage to say something... I dont know how to explain it but knowing that someone doesnt greet me even when they're being forced to it kinda hurts a little (oh im such a girl...), I mean if you're forced to greet people you should greet *everyone* no matter what they look like. It especially bothers me when the persons job is a greeter and they just look right past me and greet the person behind me, it makes me feel bad to be honest... I dont know, maybe im just being too sensetive...

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
MindlessLullaby, I know what you're talking about. Not that I ever had the courage to say anythign about it and generally just giggle to myself. But I get why you feel bad, I do myself. After all, greet them all or none, not greet the person behind someone else.
But I get those reactions without even dressing up gothy, as my hair is coloured blue, shopkeepers think I want to rob them when I pay my stuff... (yes, coloured hair or gothy clothes are rare in my country) I guess you all know the look in their eyes when they're not sure whether to call security or to wonder where society is going. Or when they see you walk in the shop and give you this typical "what are you doing here, you can't afford it anyway" look. Even if I couldn't afford it, they don't need to tell me that. And how do they know what my bankaccount looks like?
But at the end of the day, the compliments I get are in a much bigger numbre than the reactions of disgust.

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
Yeah, I just smile at the greeters, too. Smiling at people is always my first weapon of choice. Usually they straighten up and smile back. A sweet, musical "hel-lo~" sometimes does the trick.

 Re: Reactions of Disgust
I just recently (a month ago) got brave enough to start dressing the way I want to, and my friends and family are not used to it. The other day I met my friend for coffee and when she saw me she said, "You like you are going to move the scenery in a play" (because, you know, those people wear all black so you can't see them moving around on stage). It sounded critical, but she is a good friend and loves me regardless so I just laughed and we went on with our night. It wasn't the worst thing someone could say and it was kind of creative.
