That day is hereby reserved for the Chocolate Factory. Anything else can just kiss my ass.

It looks like Burton might be focusing more on the greed and faults of people than the other version did. Watching that trailer made me realise that in the original film, you don't see anyone eating the Wonka bars that they are buying, you just see people shoving them in trolleys etc (with the exception of the early scene in the sweet shop when they're singing 'The Candyman Can' and Charlie eating Wonka bars and wanting to share them of course) but in that trailer you see kids stuffing their gobs with it. Also it seems Johnny's Wonka is more obvious the way he points out people's flaws (like his little anti-gum rhyme) unlike Gene Wilder's more subtle hints that go unnoticed by the people he's aiming them at ("Spitting is a dirty habit." "I know worse ones.").

Wonderful, I can't wait to see it. 2005 seems such a long wait. ;)

With a scene obviously taken from the recantation of him saving the oompa-loompas from the twang-doodles and whatever the other creatures were called, it looks as though it goes quite beyond the book.

Schnozz woglers and rotten vernicious kernids (sp?).

ah yes, the kernids. correct me if I'm wrong, but were they the creatures they see in the Great Glass Elevator? Maybe Burton will consider doing the sequel, although it's hard to imagine if that'd work as well as the wonders of the chocolate factory

I'm so looking forward to this movie. And I'm hoping Tim Burton will restore some of the creepiness and macabre humour that always laced Roald Dahl's work, rather than have it the happy shiney kidfest that the original was.

Gene Wilder's performance notwithstanding, I was never a huge fan of the original, as I never felt that it was that similar to the book I remembered reading as a kid.

I'll join in the group *rowl*. I lust for Johnny as well as that coat.

A friend sent me an article when Charlie was still in pre-production. Apparently, Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder version of the film. When the Dahl family was approached to do a remake, they had one stipulation: Tim Burton had to direct. They felt he would stay truer to the tone of the book than the 1st director.

I wish I could find the original article I was sent so I could site the source ...

Yes the Vernicious Kinids did pop up in The Great Glass Elevator.

I've read that in several places too. Roald Dahl thought the original was too sugar coated compared to his book, he also hated changed ending to The Witches which was changed to a happier ending to appeal to audiences.

So I've showed this trailer to a couple of people (granted people who are more on the conservative side) and their feedback was that they loved the original and Gene Wilder and they feel Johnny's wrong for the part. I have the sense that none of them has actually ever read any of Dahl's books.

Anyway, has anyone else gotten less than enthused feedback on it?

one of my local friends (well, in Tulsa) said it looked too creepy :P But isn't that the POINT of having Depp and Burton do it? :P No, i've never read the book, but I've heard enough about it to know that this version is likely to be more of an accurate adaptation than the Gene Wilder version

Personally, I have never liked Gene Wilder in the role. Ever. To me, HE is creepy and not in a good way. I thought the original movie, though much loved, was too sugary and innocuous. I just know the Burton adaptation (actually, who's writing the screenplay?) will not let me down.
