Post The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow
Dr. Temple Grandin is a high-functioning autistic individual who uses her autism to decode animal behavior. Her story ("The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow") was broadcast by the BBC in 2006 for one of their Horizon science documentaries, and I've found it on YouTube:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5

While I am NOT suggesting that autism and goth are related, I am nevertheless curious as to how many others here, after watching this entire documentary, might feel the same surprise and sense of recognition that I felt when watching this? (Sort of a survey, I guess.)

Its well done and probably an accurate depiction of highly functioning autistic folks.

I certainly related with her to an extent. I've always been a little different than others. Of course, Autism also runs in my family.

I discovered that a movie of Temple Grandin's life was released in 2010 (titled Temple Grandin), and I borrowed the DVD from my public library and watched it tonight.

The movie of course differs from the documentary in that the real Temple doesn't appear in it, but you still get an understanding of what an extraordinary individual she is.

Glad you enjoyed. I think the documentary (that I linked in the OP) was more informative than the movie as far as giving information on autism research.

Dr. Bernard Rimland (research psychologist and advocate for autistic children) appears in the documentary and, sadly, he died the year the documentary was first broadcast. It was his findings that contradicted the ridiculous and repugnant Freudian belief that blamed parents for their children's autism:

"There wasn't the slightest shred of evidence that autism was an emotional disorder, psychological disorder, and instead I realized that autism was a biological disorder that had to be studied from the standpoint of biology and not psychology." -- Dr. Bernard Rimland

The human brain is fascinating.

Temple Grandin is such an inspirational person! I love that movie. And as far as surprise and recognition, I wasn't really surprised. It just kind of happened (the goth thing).

My youngest brother and I both have Asperger syndrome, which is just as misunderstood as other types of autism. It is sometimes just lumped in with "high-functioning autism".
I must get hold of that DVD...
Another good movie to watch about autism and Asperger syndrome is "Adam", released in 2009.

As someone diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, I take offense that this woman's movie is called "The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow". :x

I suggest you watch the documentary so that you will understand why it was titled thus.
