Nephele pointed out an error in my post. I leave the proof as an exercise for the reader.

I liked the second Hellboy movie more than the first because of the Steampunk feel of it that it seemed to have (to me, anyway).

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
I'm sorry, but I hated the second "Hellboy" movie. First of all, the supernatural creatures of the first movie are placed with generic Juniper Lee-esque "magical creatures". I want Hellboy to take on actual supernatural beings: zombies, vampires, mummies, werewolves, ghosts, witches, trolls, leprechauns, yetis. Not just generic monsters.
And secondly, it screwed with the characters, big time. I really don't like humanity turning on Hellboy, especially since in the comics Hellboy is treated like a celebrity akin to the Ghostbusters or the Scooby-Doo gang. And Hellboy starts questioning wether magical creatures are truly evil, which is just wrong because the whole concept of the character is that he fights evil supernatural beings. That's like Blade stopping to ponder if vampires are really evil.

I have no idea what Juniper Lee is, but if the Tuatha Dé Danann aren't supernatural enough for you then I have no idea...
Wait a second, you said LEPRECHAUNS? You want Hellboy to fight the kind of fake bullshit fairy that exists only to con gullible American tourists out of money, but the entity who created the Poison Glen by stabbing the Formorian Balor in the eye with a spear....
Just, I have no idea where you're coming from. It makes no sense.

Just, I have no idea where you're coming from. It makes no sense. And just to add to what Arq said... witches are not supernatural beings. I should know being as I am one (as in I practice witchcraft -which is found in Paganism- and typically you call people who do that witches). Just saying... Could Harry Potter be considered dark? Five Girls was an interesting movie and I think that was after 2000 I'd also vote for The Others (2001), but that's still pretty well known. If nothing else, then Blood and Bone China is a must add to the list. Oh yeah, Adding: @Arq: You mean the Leprechauns are nothing more than a tourist trap for people like me? Damn. I was so hoping to go to Ireland and find me a little person in a green suit and green top hat, under a rainbow so I could steal its pot o' gold. Kill me dream, Arq, Kill me dream.

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
1-I mean witches in the fictional, "Wizard of Oz"/"Harry Potter"/"Blair Witch" sense of the word. Not the real-life "Wiccans". 2-Actually, I looked up leprechauns on Wikipedia, and apparently the image of the leprechaun has basis in actual Irish mythology, even if the modern image of the leprechaun differs from it. As for leprechauns not being "real"...neither is Hellboy. Or Abe Sapien, or Liz Sherman, or Agent Myers or the B.P.R.D. as a whole. It's all fiction, so I don't see why leprechans being "real" should matter or not. 3-I'm not knowledgeable enough in mythology to know what the "Tuatha De Dannan" is, so when I saw the second movie I just assumed it was some generic creature that the movie made up. 4-This is Juniper Lee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g49FPOQmMkwIt's a show about the "Te Xuan Ze", the chosen one to defend humans from evil magical creatures. The problem with that series is that the "magical creatures" turn out to be just generic monsters, instead of a varied cast of supernatural creatures. The first movie was closer to "Jake Long", pitting Hellboy against a variety of supernatural creatures instead of just generic monsters.

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
Are you sure you haven't got the films backwards? It's been a while since I watched either, but I only remember him fighting that one monster (that doubled everytime you killed it), The clockwork nazi and then the final "big bad" at the end in the first one, where the second one had toothfairy's, those elves (Te Xuan Ze?), some kind of troll creature, the giant robot things, and then the city filled with an array of fantastic looking creatures...I think the clockwork nazi was there too.

Also his Guardian Angel..... <3 The tooth fairies were hillarious. I should watch the movies again. Also: this. Gabriel Van Helsing wrote: As for leprechauns not being "real"...neither is Hellboy. We still notice you don't know what you're talking about!

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
Van Helsing- Please see my PM about what you wrote concerning Witches and Wiccans. Thanks!
Arq- Mirror Mask was weird for me. It took me about 3-4 tries before I could actually watch it all the way through. For some reason I could never get past the first ten minutes without being bored to death. But when I finally decided to sit through it all and really watch it, it did turn out to be pretty interesting, and yes- very dark!
