Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
Let's share some well known and less well known good horror or dark (by Dark I mean a genre which isn't exactly horror but isn't really action or thriller either, such as 'Constantine') movies for others to discover! Only one rule; no movies made before 2000. I nominate the Final Destination movies, simply great!

Sherlock Holmes (2009), starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
This movie also gets steampunk points.

Lesser known, huh?...
Hostel (2009) - Eli Roth at his best Hard Candy (2005) - With a VERY young Ellen Page Haute Tension (2003) - Awesome and French The Descent (2005) - DO NOT WATCH IF YOU ARE CLAUSTROPHOBIC!!! You were warned... Rec (2007) - NOT the shitty US remake. I hate the remake.

Of all the movies flying about in my head The Wolfman is about all I can think of, but that's not lesser known. I'll have to think about this.

Everything Guillermo del Toro has done since 2000. Simples.

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
For a lesser-known movie, I recommend The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010).
It's a French film and I saw it with English subtitles. Not what I'd call real "horror," but more sort of humorously macabre, with a rampaging pterodactyl, hatpin through the skull, mummies, etc.
And this one especially gets steampunk points, too.

I didn't like Sherlock Holmes too much because it isn't true to the novels.

I thought the original script, superb acting, and brilliant soundtrack made for a ripping good movie. -- Nephele Who has read all of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, enjoyed them, and also enjoys many things inspired by those stories.

The Road. The most morbid and depressing movie ever made, based on an equally morbid and depressing book.

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
Hmm...wondering if I should nominate the Twilight movies since they put me in a dark mood... Okay My List (I looked on Wiki, by the way, to help jog my memory): Thir13en GhostsSteven King's Rose RedDarkness FallsMortuaryThe OmenSilent Hill1408I Am LegendParanormal ActivityIdentityWhat is listed is mainly horror, but if dark counts for fantasy as well then I'd have to add some more movies, like Hellboy and Underworld.

Re: Best Dark/Horror movies of the 2000s!
And is it safe to say the Resident Evil films as well? Sure they were action/horror, but I still think they count as a dark action, even though just like Silent Hill they were based off a video game. That's all I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet. Plus most of the dark or horror films I like other than Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Underworld came out before the turn of the current millennium (I still get a kick that I'm able to say that I like stuff that came out before the turn of the century and turn of the millennium )

This year's new indie horror film, Absentia is getting a lot of notice. I haven't yet seen it, but I'm planning to next week. -- Nephele
