alright, i have a little bit of a situation.
I'm an OAC student (grade 13) and i have to do an independant study project for my english class. My proposal for what i want to do is due on monday.
The project has to be a comparative essay between (min) 2 novels of at least 250 pages. Problem is, I really don't know of any good books that i could stand to read and ALSO compare.
I figure I have a lot of the same interests as most of you, so i'd be really great if someone could help me out, and give me some ideas as to what would be good to read and compare.
??
*bashes head off of wall* why do i leave everything to the last minute?
thanks!

I'm not a big fan of telling people what they should do in this sort of situation, but I think I've got an idea that might point you in the right direction...
A lot of Victorian writers had to deal with the fact that they had to choose between their art and their duty as women (which we all know is a big sham - yet, part of the zeitgeist of the age)...They crafted brilliant records in their own work that reflected this struggle - this desire to put aside the whims of their husbands/fathers/mothers/society and undertake writerly pursuits that weren't commonplace for them at the time...
If you take "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" by Joyce - which portrays the masculine side of the artist vs. society's views of his role and compare it to one of these novels of the artist vs. society's condemnation of her desire to be an artist, you might have an interesting go at your independent study...
Just a suggestion to consider...

Read and compare "Dracula" and "Frankenstein"! Both are great books and it would make for a great project...but that's just my two cents...

well im not sure if this will work out (because i havent read the books so im not sure if they're comparable)
but yeah, my proposal was to compare and contrast Catcher In the Rye and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Mostly just comparing like.. the lives of 2 outcast adolescents .. you know. It's kind of typical, but hopefully it'll work. =-/
