 Book Recommendations
I am deeply sorry if this topic has been asked before, but I searched and could not find one. I would love some Gothic book recommendations. I loved Dracula, Frankenstein and the like, and would like some ideas for new reading material... Possibly some not-as-well-known ones. Thank you so much!

http://www.goth.net/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 8&p=280079But new books are always being written, and that old thread was closed awhile back. Here's a book I read awhile back, that's even more fun if you've already read the original novel by Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies-- Nephele

 Re: Book Recommendations
The Radleys... it's quite good, although I admit I struggled through the first half (probably as I was not used to the writing style). The second half had me riveted and I read it through in a matter of hours -- Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:47 pm -- Also Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu... I couldn't put it down and it's entered the top five of my favourite books of all time -- Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:51 pm -- Nephele wrote: http://www.goth.net/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 8&p=280079 But new books are always being written, and that old thread was closed awhile back. Re: Book Recommendations
"Vampire of New York" by Lee Hunt
Archaeologist Carrie Norton makes a startling find in a historic New York City site: the remains of a Civil War-era murder victim. Detective Max Slattery sees something more-uncanny parallels to a recent series of brutal slayings. What seems impossible becomes terrifyingly real as Carrie and Max's investigation unearths a conspiracy between the living and the dead nearly two centuries in the making-one that has yet to claim its final victims.
Quite good for a mass market paperback. Alternates between the Civil war and the modern eras.

 Re: Book Recommendations
How about something by Poppy Z. Brite? Like, Exquisite Corpse, Lost Souls, or Drawing Blood? Or one of the short story collections?

 Re: Book Recommendations
I don't know if any of you know about this, but Bookfinder.com searches the entire interwebs for the lowest prices on any book, used and new. It includes shipping in the price. I found Exquisite Corpse for $0.50 and free shipping. First Ed. with jacket in perfect condition. Yay! Thriftbooks.com also has good deals. You get discounts for ordering multiple books from the same state ($0.50 off each book after the first book). Hope this helps.

 Re: Book Recommendations
At the moment I'm reading a book called "The Woman in Black" by Susan Hill. It is the classic ghost story set probably around the middle of the 20th century. The writing style is beautiful and eloquent, with rich scenery and engaging narrative. A lawyer goes to a remote town to settle the affairs of a mysterious, reclusive old woman. At her funeral, he sees a strange woman dressed in mourning attire, whom no one else sees. I haven't finished the book yet, but things are starting to go wrong for him, as is the way with ghost stories Worth picking up. The hardcover version has stunning cover art.

Genesis by Karin Slaughter.
Crime thriller and EXTREMELY GOREY. If you don't like gore, violence or anything explicit, then don't buy. >:D

Pity she stopped writing horror right when the major publishing houses stopped paying big bucks for Horror novels (er coincidentally ofcourse. Not like foodie porn is gonna sell... oh wait). That being said, those first few books are dear as lifesblood, and some of the best horror I have ever read. If I might offer a few personal favorites: Night in the Lonesome October - Richard Laymon (though honestly you can't really go wrong with any of his work, in my experience) Vampire$ - John Steakly - big fun vampire hunters, as usual disregard the film. Anything, literally anything by Caitlin Kiernan, though Silk is still my favorite. Skin - Kathe Koja. And ofcourse HPL... always and ever, till the old gods rise, HPL.

 Re: Book Recommendations
I highly recommend "Past World" by Ian Beck. In the future, Pastworld is a living recreation of old Victorian London. Tourists can literally immerse themselves in the Victorian Era. It is not without risk, for in an effort to make Pastworld as realistic as possible, the modern world is suspended. This includes the police, medicine, etc. Many "employees" of pastworld have lived their entire lives there and do not know it is a theme park. One tourist runs into a murderer loosely based on Jack the Ripper involving a coverup, and has to turn to a resident of Pastworld for help.
This is a Young Adult novel, so it not particularly deep or "heavy", but is a quick, enjoyable read.
