I've recently fallen in love with Rozz Williams' version of the Velvet Underground song 'Venus In Furs', but I'm not entirely sure about the meaning of the lyrics. I would really appreciate a quick explanation, if anyone can offer one.
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart [I]

Seems to me the song is about a desire to be dominated. But to be sure, you'd probably need to ask Lou Reed. :p
And it's Velvet Underground, not Underground Velvet.

lol I know it's Velvet Underground. Either something went wrong when I posted that or I was just very very tired.

I think "Venus in Furs" was a book by Sacher-Masoch,the gentleman for whom masochism was named. He liked women in furs to flog him or suchlike-I think this song was for him.

I thought I had read in a Marilyn Manson analysis something about it being a book or a film. I'll try and find out more.
Thanks

The name is taken from the book, and is quite apparantly a reference to BDSM. It's funny how many bands have covered it at one time or another - Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rosetta Stone, The Smashing Pumpkins and (in my opinion the best version) Christian Death
