What bothers me most is not just that they strip searched a kid, but (iirc) they did it on hearsay from another student. There's a reason hearsay is excluded in courts. Namely that vindictive people (and tween girls can be nasty) have been known to lie just to stir shit up. Besides, I don't know why...

Nephele, the only problem with making marriage entirely a matter of contract law is taxes and government benefits. You'd still need a government registry of the contracts, unless you just wanted to do away with the tax exemptions and benefits married people are eligible for (which would make a lot o...

I really don't see the logic of defining marriage as between a man & a woman. I don't see how some could successfully argue that it should be defined a certain way, just because of whatever their religion's rules stipulate. Accepting the "marriage is a religious institution" argument ...

Finally finished the whole series (why do I do these things to myself?). My opinion is the story wasn't terrible -- as far as the stupid vampire romance genre goes -- but the mistakes definitely overshadowed anything good about the books. If people will indulge me for a sec, I've been compiling a li...

I don't really understand the world of economics and business, so if anybody can tell me why we're bothering with all these bailouts, please explain. Because, clueless as I am, I seem to remember that a lot of these large corporations have been dodgy and hemorrhaging money for at least as long as I'...

From what I remember and have been told by older punky people, the Nazi stuff was like the S&M gear, it got people all pissed off and frothing at the mouth. The irony being that most punks were extremely anti-fascism/racism and not particularly interested in fetish stuff. It was kind of a protes...

I read a lot of R.L. Stine when I was a kid, those were also meant for children. My parents would really only let me visit the children's section of the library. I also read some Stephen King a bit too early. It was at a garage sale when I went with my mother and I read "It" when I was li...

Something I thought of a minute ago while I was Twisnarking elsewhere -- Volvos do not go fast. I should know, I've owned six of various types (two were even silver  ). The fastest one -- a Turbo GT -- would do 90 mph if it was in a good mood. The others wouldn't go over 75 without shaking lik...

Given that I'm an artist and the owner of two lovely (but also huge, hyper and drooly) Airedale Terriers, I'm pretty much the perfect illustration of Murphy's Law when it comes to accessories. If my jewelry/clothing can get dirty or broken, it will. If I wear accessories they've got to be close-fitt...

Edward= Gaurdian Cullen= Handsome Thus, SMeyer reinforces the "brave prince has to save the damsel-in-distress from the monster" cliche through name play. Except Edward's pretty much the worst guardian ever. For a guy who's 100 years old and able to read minds, he's absolutely clueless ab...

I've had a lot of jobs that involved dead or seriously ill people, so I'm always conscious of the image I'm projecting at work. There are a lot of people who can't separate "I'm interested in dark things" from "I am overjoyed your ancestor/friend/relative is dying/dead and will probab...

So far New Moon is a glorious mess. Chapters One and Two goes something like this: Bella has a dream that she's her own grandma. Then she wakes up and realizes she's now 18, and that's older than Edward--math really isn't her best subject. Then she bitches because people bought her presents, somethi...

My dad got me my very own copy of New Moon for Easter (I don't know whether to love him for so willingly assisting me in my snarking or beat him to death with it). And since I've just finished a very well written, thought provoking account of the Triangle Factory Fire, my brain is satiated enough th...

What bothers me most about Columbine is how an obvious media circus was so influential. It seemed obvious to me at the time (I was a high school senior) that people seemed to know too much too early. The media were releasing the "whole story" before the police had even had time to clean up...

Hey, when you're an uber-rich movie goddess (preferably married, but at that tax bracket you don't need two incomes to care for the brood, so whatever) and UN ambassador before the age of 40, you can have as many kids as you like. Not so if you're a single college student. Well, not exactly. Really...
