GOTH.NET Questions
Q: Do I need to be a GOTH.NET member to use the Chat?
A: No. The IRC Chat is a seperate entity to GOTH.NET and you do not have to have a membership to sign on to the Chat network.
Q: When I join the Chat, nobody seems to be talking?
A: A large number of the users that frequent the channels on the DarkerNet IRC Network are regular chatters, many with permanent internet connections, so their clients are always online. While their nicknames might be listed in the channel, this does not necessarily mean that they are at their keyboards. This is known as 'idling' or 'lurking'.
Also be aware that we have a lot of users from around the globe, concentrated mainly in three major timezone sections: America, Europe and Australia. So while it might be 7 in the evening for you, it might be a less appropriate chatting time for other people in the channels.
Q: The Java Applet won't connect, what's wrong?
A: To use this applet you must have Java version 1.3 minimum installed on your system. If the applet does not load you do not have the required Java browser plug-in. You can download this plug-in at www.java.sun.com.
This applet might also run slow if your computer has low RAM memory. If this is the case we recommend that you try downloading one of the IRC clients as listed on the Chat section, these often use less resources than the Java Applet.
Q: What is IRC?
A: For more information on what Internet Relay Chat is we recommend you read www.irchelp.org. They have explanations and definitions and information about the goings on of IRC networks.
Q: I'm having trouble with my mIRC?
A: Often we have users ask us questions about their mIRC. Please go to the mIRC website and look at their FAQ's. Many of the users on DarkerNet do not use mIRC as their IRC client, and there are many other IRC clients out there, so not everybody will be able to field your mIRC questions.
Q: I forgot my password, what do I do?
A: Please email forums@goth.net with your user/login name and the email address you used to sign up with on the Forums (NOT your GOTH.NET email/webspace username!) and let the Administrators know.
Q: Do I need to be a GOTH.NET member to use the Forums?
A: No, you don't have to be a GOTH.NET member to use the Forums, they are open to visitors and members alike. Even GOTH.NET members will have to sign up seperately for the Forums. The Forums run on their own databases and are not linked to the email/webspace membership databases.
Q: I signed up just now and can't post to the board?
A: The answer to this question is in the email that was sent out to you when you registered. The initial email that is sent from the Forums is to verify that your email account is valid and working, NOTHING ELSE. All accounts have to be approved by an Administrator before users can post. Usually this happens within a few hours maximum. At the most it will take no more than 24 hours, so please be patient.
Q: I tried to paste HTML code and it's not working?
A: The Forums have been set so that they do not allow HTML posts. This is to stop potential exploits and abuse. The Forums have "Code Buttons" to achieve functions like posting images, email and website addresses. In the posting screen you will see a row underneath the smileys called 'iB Code Buttons' with Buttons marked 'Image' 'HTTP://' 'Quote' etc. if you press these some of them will prompt you with a field in which to enter the website/picture address in. Others will put tags like

into your post window... please insert the text that you wish to have quoted, or underlined/italicised/bolded (depending on the button pressed) between the tags. One tag is to open, another to close.
Q: My avatar isn't working?
A: If you are using an avatar of your own, please make sure that the website you are hosting it on allows external linking. Some sites like Geocities and Angelfire don't allow this. If this is the case you will either have to find someone else to host your image for you, or to choose one from the selection on the board, or to select no avatar. Please do not email us at GOTH.NET asking if we will host your avatar for you, as we will not.
Q: I signed up ages ago, but my membership seems to be gone?
A: Roughly every 3 or so months we go through all the accounts and delete the inactive ones, this is to avoid having 'namesquatting' and also to keep a relatively 'fresh' database of members. If you are a member who has posted previously, we give leniency with the time frame of non-posting, but generally if you've never posted in the first three months of your Forum membership it means you probably won't, such has been our experience at any rate.
Q: What do the words "Avernus, Dis, Minauros, Phlegethos, Stygia, Malbolge, Maladomini, Cania and Nessus" under the member names/avatars mean?
A: Depending on how many posts you have on the board, you can be in a certain group. Needing various group names and wanting something themed, we decided to name the groups after the 9 layers of Hell with Avernus being the lowest and Nessus being the highest. It's nothing important, just something amusing
Q: How do I unsubscribe?
A: Please email forums@goth.net with your username/email address that you used to sign-up and request that your account be closed. You can also send Lilith or PreZ a private message through the Forums too.
